Buckle delamination on patterned substrates
نویسندگان
چکیده
Lithographic techniques applied to a substrate prior to film deposition can create areas of low interface adhesion surrounded by regions of high adhesion. If the film is under compression and if buckle delamination is nucleated, conditions can be controlled such that delaminations are confined to the patterned areas of low adhesion. When the area of low adhesion is a strip, the width of the strip controls the buckle morphology: smooth Euler buckles for narrow strips, asymmetric telephone cord buckles for wider strips, and symmetric varicose buckles under a very limited range of conditions. Results for the elastic energy in the buckled state show that above a critical stress the telephone cord morphology is the preferred morphology. Energy release rates for propagating delaminations are determined for each of the three morphologies. Tapered strips provide an accurate means of measuring interface adhesion based on the width of the strip where the delamination arrests. 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Buckling delamination in compressed multilayers on curved substrates with accompanying ridge cracks
Residually compressed films and coatings are susceptible to buckle delamination. The buckles often have linear or telephone cord morphology. When the films are brittle, such buckles are susceptible to the formation of ridge cracks that extend along their length, terminating close to the propagating front. The ridge-cracked buckles are invariably straight-sided (not telephone cord) and differ in...
متن کاملConcomitant wrinkling and buckle-delamination of elastic thin films on compliant substrates
Compressing a thin elastic film attached to a thick compliant substrate can lead to buckling instability. Two commonly observed buckling modes, buckle-delamination and wrinkling, have each been analyzed separately in previous studies. Recent experiments have observed that the two modes can co-exist and co-evolve. In this paper, by analytical and finite element methods, we present a study on con...

متن کاملSwelling-induced delamination causes folding of surface-tethered polymer gels.
When a polymer film that is weakly attached to a rigid substrate is exposed to solvent, swelling-induced compressive stress nucleates buckle delamination of the film from the substrate. Surprisingly, the buckles do not have a sinusoidal profile, instead, the film near the delamination buckles slides toward the buckles causing growth of sharp folds of high aspect ratio. These folds do not result...
متن کاملBuckling modes of elastic thin films on elastic substrates
Two buckling modes have been observed in thin films: buckle delamination and wrinkling. This letter identifies the conditions for selecting the favored buckling modes for elastic films on elastic substrates. Transition from one buckling mode to another is predicted as the stiffness ratio between the substrate and the film or is predicted for variation of the stiffness ratio between the substrat...
